Liz Edwards – Co-Founder & C.E.O.
Liz has 20 years experience of working in the voluntary sector with women’s, youth and housing organisations. As well as working for Rubies, she has almost completed training to be a psychotherapeutic counsellor and is also now training as a Child Therapeutic Practitioner. She has lived in Middlesbrough since 2013 and is a leader in her local church. Liz is a huge animal lover and has 2 rescue greyhounds.
Fran Calvey – Primary Schools Co-ordinator
Fran has spent the last 10 years raising three daughters. Originally having a back ground in media and radio, she used to run workshops in schools teaching video communication. A born and bred Teessider, Fran is passionate about working with girls to raise their self confidence and encourage them to be proud of who they are and their place in the world. Outside of Rubies, Fran is a massive fan of swimming in the north sea – all year round!
Faye Vaughan – Girls Group Co-ordinator
Faye is our new Girls Group Co-Ordinator, running GLOW on a Wednesday night. Faye started as a volunteer in 2019 at our Sparkle and Slime summer event and joined our schools team shortly after. Faye is a married mum with daughters and is passionate about creating a space for girls to feel welcome, included and listened to. Faye has a background in dance, drama and music, and a passion for all things creative.
Dawn Palmer – Project Assistant
Dawn joined Rubies on a placement in January 2020 after taking time out of work to raise her twin boys. Dawn is passionate about girls knowing their worth and about raising awareness of issues around body image and social media. Dawn also volunteers for other community organisations in Middlesbrough. She is super-organised and a great baker.
Jane Cavana – Admin & Finance Officer
Jane is a born and bred Teessider with over 30 years experience in finance and admin and 20 years experience in the voluntary sector. She has 2 grown up sons and one grandson. In her spare time, Jane is an avid dressmaker and loves to listen to live rockabilly bands.
Steph McGovern – Patron
BBC and Channel 4 Presenter Steph grew up in Middlesbrough and is determined to see girls from her local area succeed, despite the challenges they may face. Steph has been a huge supporter of Rubies, raising awareness of our work through filming with BBC Breakfast and donating funds through the sale of ‘Girly Swot’ jumpers – as seen on ‘Have I Got News For You’ in 2019. We are delighted that she is our first charity patron and can’t wait to see what the future holds!
Ruth Fox – Chair of Trustees
Ruth is the founder and CEO of Footprints in the Community, a local charity helping to reduce poverty and isolation in Redcar & East Cleveland. She has 18 years experience working in the voluntary sector and is passionate about helping people achieve and improve their lives. Ruth is mum to three grown up sons and nanna to 5 grandchildren. She is a member of her local church.
Alison Vaughan – Trustee (Treasurer)
Alison has been an office manager with a local company for the past 11 years. She has a talent for administration and finance and has previous experience of working with local charities. She has 2 children and 4 grandchildren and is an active member of her local church. Alison is the Treasurer for Rubies.
Jade Wadrop – Trustee
Jade started out as a volunteer for Rubies. She has lived in Middlesbrough all her life and really understands the struggles that girls can face. She is passionate about offering support that can change lives. Jade has a customer service and admin background and now works as a medical secretary. She also loves all things Disney.
Vanessa Kirby – Trustee
Vanessa is born and bred on Teesside. Although she has had various roles, the main focus of her work has been supporting families and vulnerable women. In September 2020 she was ordained in the Church of England and is now an assistant curate in Middlesbrough. Vanessa loves to walk by the coast and on the North Yorkshire Moors. She is partial to anything containing chocolate and is looking forward to being a part of enabling Rubies to develop and thrive.
Jan Turner – Trustee & Safeguarding Lead
Jan has worked for over 20 years in both statutory and voluntary sectors, providing direct support to children, young people and families. She has held specific safeguarding roles and continues to deliver regional safeguarding training on behalf of a church organisation. Jan is married with 2 adult daughters and loves to travel. She provides advice and support for Rubies on a voluntary basis.
